Recent events in our county have brought Silicon Valley and the County of Santa Clara to the forefront of the national movement to protect our democracy and the constitution, and on furthering the rights and situation of working people, immigrants, women, and others. One of the trends that has not been highlighted to a sufficient degree, and began well before last November, is the enactment of new local labor standards to increase access to opportunity and prosperity for our vulnerable residents and workers. Our cities and the County have enacted new municipal labor standards ranging from local minimum wage policies to wage theft policies, living wage policies, and even pay equity policies in order to raise the quality of life for our residents as well as stem persistent wage theft, discrimination and even labor trafficking in our region.
